Plein-air abstract paintings

The Earth Rubbing series was inspired by the grave rubbing technique in which paper is layer over a headstone and rubbed with waxed graphite to express the features of the stone on to the paper. By using canvas, rollers, and site specific natural geography I have created a series of abstract paintings often titled by their latitude and longitude numbers. The colors are chosen inspired by the location as is the mood of the piece.

The abstract overall image has been a constant source of interest for me. I have traveled through representational and conceptual narrative paintings but I feel most at home with an image that has no hierarchical elements and appears to extend beyond the edge of the canvas. To that end I have explored many techniques to achieve such images with this Earth Rubbing  being the most fun.
