Picture your gift (painting, writing, cooking, surfing) as a white silk flag standing up behind you in the wind as you race through the meadow on your life’s path. Now imagine all the things people have said about your gift starting from when you can remember. All the hurt feelings and weird statements attached to the edges of your flag like clothespins scrunching and weighing down the edges. Now look at the center thees a map of all the things you have thought you have to do with this gift. Responsibilities, ideas, mailing lists, supplies, classes, people. all drawn in the middle and roundabout in radiant text are all the reasons each idea didn’t or cant come true. There’s a big hole in the flag too where we wasted time that we can never recover. What have I done to my beautiful flag?
My first and foremost goal each day has to be to clear out these impingement. Release the past and the future elements crowding out my dreams. There’s a great passage from A Course in Miracles,
W189L7. Simply do this:Be still and lay aside all thoughts of what you are and what God is; all concepts you have learned about the world; all images you hold about yourself. Empty your mind of everything it thinks is either true or false or good or bad; of every thought it judges worthy and all the ideas of which it is ashamed. Hold onto nothing. Do not bring with you one thought the past has taught, nor one belief you ever learned before from anything. For‐ get this world, forget this course, and come with wholly empty hands unto your God.
When I can release the past and the future there is no telling what will happen for my art. The limits of creativity are boundless as are the limits for it’s path in to the world. It’s a good start to the day anyway. Picture your gift.
